'Barns of Minnesota' program set at CCHS
Photographer Doug Ohman of New Hope, Minn., will present a slide program called "Barns of Minnesota" at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Carlton County Historical Society in Cloquet. This program is sponsored by Cloquet's Frandsen Bank and Trust, Lemon Tree Liquor and Nelson Funeral Care.
Ohman and author Will Weaver put together the first book in the Minnesota Byways series called "Barns of Minnesota." The idea for this book came from an editor at the Minnesota Historical Society to do a book about barns before they all fall down. Several more books have been published in the series, pairing Ohman's photos with some of the best writers in the state.
The book "Barns of Minnesota" features 85 color photos of real-life barns in 36 Minnesota counties. Ohman said some of those barns have fallen down since he took the pictures, but the images of the barns offer a glimpse of a bygone era and the people who lived it.
This program compliments the current CCHS exhibit on "Barns of Carlton County" with photographs and farm tools on view. After the program, refreshments will be served and visitors will have an opportunity to view the exhibit, which closes Nov. 6.
Regular admission to the museum is $1, with children under 12 and CCHS members admitted at no charge. The CCHS museum is handicapped accessible. For questions call the CCHS at 218-879-1938.
