SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES

AUGUST 21, 2017

The Wrenshall Board of Education, Independent School District No. 100, Wrenshall, Minnesota held its regular board meeting in the Library Media Center at Wrenshall School on Monday, August 21, 2017. Chairperson Laveau called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m.

Members present: Matthew Laveau, Michelle Blanchard, Tony Sheda, Renae House, and Janaki Fisher-Merritt. Members absent: Warren Weiderman.

MOTION by House seconded by Blanchard to approve the agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Sheda seconded by Fisher-Merritt to approve the consent agenda including checks #47567-#47628. Motion carried unanimously.

Report of Superintendent:

Enrollment Update for school year 2017/2018.

Fall sports update: Football - 17 students, Cross Country - 10 students, Volleyball - 27 students.

Final preparations are underway for opening of the 2017/2018 school year.

Superintendent Belcastro recognized the following:

Amy Olesen and Michelle Alexy for advising Wrenshall Cheer Team for 2017/2018 school year.

Informational items:

Fuel, Milk and Bakery bids were discussed for the 2017/2018 school year.

Discussion regarding all Wrenshall students free pass to all sporting events as suggested by Kevin Olesen and Joanne Lattu. Question about how this affects Booster Club scholarships.

Student Handbook discussion. Changes suggested: alternatives to detention/ISS as well as to include "parental responsibility" in the language regarding payment of student fines and bills.

Discussion regarding validity of a check received from Benevity Community Impact Fund in the amount of $1,456.50.

Discussion regarding the Pool and the Recreation Building.

Discussion regarding the meeting structure for facility planning to include Community members.

MOTION by House seconded by Fisher-Merritt to accept bids as received for Milk and Bakery for school year 2017/2018. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Laveau to approve Student Handbook for the 2017/2018 school year with changes as discussed regarding detention/ISS and parental responsibility added to the language regarding payment of student fines and bills. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Blanchard seconded by House to approve school lunch price change to $2.50 for Elementary and $2.60 for Secondary. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by House seconded by Sheda to accept the Just Kids Dental contract for year 2017/2018. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Blanchard seconded by Fisher-Merritt to approve Amy Olesen and Michelle Alexy as Wrenshall Cheer Team Advisors for the 2017/2018 school year. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by Sheda seconded by Blanchard to approve lane change for Sue Tracy from BA + 30/8 to BA + 40/9 per ED MN Wrenshall Contract effective September 1, 2017. Motion carried unanimously.

MOTION by House seconded by Fisher-Merritt to approve indefinite closure to all but storage use of the Recreation Building until decision is made to abate the hazards and ensure compliance. Motion carried unanimously.

Open Forum:

Community members expressed the following:

Indicated the desire to be an active part of the planning process for longterm facilities maintenance.

Encouraged everyone to pay attention to each other and to communicate.

Clarification on fees paid or not paid to Boldt Construction, Ehlers Financial and Krech Ojard.

Superintendent Belcastro fielded a question regarding bus drivers by confirming that people are not currently stepping up to be bus drivers for the district.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt seconded by Laveau to adjourn the meeting at 8:17 p.m. Motion carried unanimously.
