Carlton Daze tradition continues this weekend

Carlton Daze has been going on so long it practically organizes itself.

"It's really unique and kind of weird," Carlton Chamber of Commerce President Shanna Wolf said. "It's evolved over the years and everyone knows it's the last weekend in July."

5K race

While longtime 5K organizer Leola Rodd has stepped down, the race will continue with registration and pre-registered packet pickup Friday, July 27 from 3-5:45 p.m. at the Four Seasons Sports Complex. The event has grown from 66 participants 25 years ago to 165 last year.

The kids races sign up is 3-4:45 p.m. at the Four Seasons for both age groups, 2-5 and 6-8, with the race starting at 5 p.m.

"Leola passed the baton on and the Chamber is organizing the 5K this year," Wolf said. "Hopefully, we will do her proud."

Berry pie-baking contest

New to Carlton Daze this year is a berry pie-baking contest Saturday, July 28. The contest is 9-11 a.m. at Thrivent Financial on Chestnut Avenue. Pies will be available to the public after the judging.

Outdoor movies

New at the Oldenburg House this summer is outdoor movies Friday and Saturday evenings at dark. Set up chairs or blankets when the doors open at 8 p.m. Food trucks and vendors will be selling picnic fare, popcorn and ice cream.

On Friday, the family friendly movie "Coco" is playing; no alcoholic beverages will be sold.

The movie "Big Lebowski" will be featured Saturday; the fee is $5. Beer and wings will also be served that night.

Softball, volleyball tourneys

The longstanding traditions of softball and volleyball tournaments continue. Softball begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday and volleyball starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Third Base.

The Third Base will host the band Aftershock or at the VFW with Stranded at 9 p.m.

Ultramarathon

Saturday events begin bright and early with the check-in/race start for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra 50 Mile Foot Race 5-6 a.m. at the Carlton High School.

The ultramarathon race packet pickup is at the Four Seasons on Friday from 4-7 p.m.

Red Barn Festival

The Red Barn Festival will offer family friendly events from noon to 6 p.m. The new festival offers summer games, such as bean bag toss and kickball, as well as four bands out in a field. The bands will play classic, rock, blues and country music.

Organizer Jeff Grover is excited excited to see the new event unfold this year. He encourages the public to come check out the event at the end of Chub Lake Park Road, next to the softball fields.

Paddlemania

Paddlemania is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday on the St. Louis River. Whitewater Kayak will be running on the river. Spectators are welcome to all events.

Paddlemania offers excitement Saturday afternoon with its "Blast to the Bridge" at 1 p.m. and "Slot Machine Showcase Showdown" at 4 p.m.

Its weekend ends with "Team Rafting Slalom" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
